I have an old command-line utility that I use when I need to compute an MD5 hash for a file (it was written by an ex-NSA employee) - but recently I found myself wanting a more user-friendly tool - and also needed to check an SHA1 hash for a file I downloaded.
This utility seems to fit the need quite nicely:
